Patients will have access to cataract care close to home beginning February 22. Dr. Ajay Shalwala of Avera Marshall Southwest Ophthalmology will perform cataract surgeries on a monthly basis at Sleepy Eye Medical Center.
“We are thrilled to bring cataract services back to our patients and community. It’s been a few years, and we know it has been missed,” said Kevin Sellheim, SEMC Administrator.
“There’s something to be said about convenient, quality care in your hometown. Dr. Shalwala is a great fit for our patient population and will certainly help us better care for those with this specific ophthalmologic need.”
Dr. Richard Dannenberg, who retired in December of 2013, was the last ophthalmologist to offer this service at SEMC.
Referrals from an eye doctor will be required. From there, scheduling can take place. However, the process is a little different from other surgical procedures. Patients will need to contact Avera Marshall Southwest Ophthalmology at 507-537-1427 to schedule their procedure.
Special Note: SEMC thanks Dr. Jim Hutchins of Lifetime Eyecare Center for the support and knowledge he offered as our local optometrist. We appreciate his commitment to providing our community with excellent eye care and are grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with him on this endeavor.
