A coronary calcium scan is a quick, painless CT scan that checks for calcium (plaque) in the arteries of your heart. Your results are reported as a calcium score, which helps show your risk of heart disease.
Who Should Consider It?
Adults with risk factors such as:
- Family history of heart disease
- High blood pressure or cholesterol
- Diabetes
- Smoking
- Overweight or obesity
Note: Coronary calcium scans require a provider referral. Please talk with your healthcare provider to see if a scan is right for you.
Cost
The scan is available for $100, payable at the time of your appointment. Insurance does not usually cover this screening, but you may use funds from a Health Savings Account (HAS), Flexible Spending Account (FSA), or Health Reimbursement Account (HRA).
What to Expect
- No prep time is needed.
- 15-minute appointment (approximately)
- Simply CT scan—just lie on a table and briefly hold your breath (no IV or contrast dye)
Getting Your Results
Your calcium score is reviewed by a radiologist and shared with your primary care provider. Results are typically available within 3-5 business days. In addition, you can view your results on your My SEMC Chart.
Interpreting Your Results
Your results will be given as a calcium score (Agatston score):
- Zero means no calcium was detected, which suggests a low risk of heart disease.
- Higher numbers mean more calcium build-up was found, signaling a greater chance of heart disease and a stronger need to make a plan with your provider.
Knowing your calcium score helps you and your care team understand your heart health—before problems develop.
