In April, Chris Davis, Licensed Social Worker of Prairie Family Counseling, LLC, will begin offering counseling services to pediatric and adult patients at Sleepy Eye Medical Center.
Davis has nearly 20 years of experience providing mental health services for adults, children and families. Upon moving to New Ulm in 2005, he worked at Sioux Trails Mental Health Center for 11 years. In November of 2016, Davis opened his private practice, Prairie Family Counseling, LLC, in New Ulm. He also currently provides counseling services to students at St. Mary’s and Sleepy Eye Public School.
“Early in 2017, one of our physicians mentioned Chris recently began his own private practice. We reached out to him to see if we could partner to provide a service to patients in our facility,” said Kevin Sellheim, Administrator at SEMC. “Mental health services are almost non-existent in Sleepy Eye, and we felt this would be a great opportunity to fill a significant void in our community.”
Davis offers expertise and skills in the areas of depression, anxiety, ADHD, oppositional behavior, trauma, anger and domestic abuse.
“I’m excited and looking forward to collaborating with SEMC, offering services to people in Sleepy Eye and the surrounding communities. People in rural towns can have barriers that may keep them from seeking help for themselves or a family member. Having a mental health provider in Sleepy Eye will make treatment services more accessible,” said Davis.
Davis describes himself as a friendly, non-judgmental person with a good sense of humor who connects easily with others. He uses an eclectic therapeutic style, drawing from cognitive-behavioral, psychodynamic and mindfulness/acceptance practices.
“Chris is very personable, and we believe he will be great with our patients. It’s with much excitement that we welcome him to SEMC,” said Sellheim.
According to Davis, therapy can be helpful in navigating the high and lows of life.
“Life is a journey. At times, we all need someone to help sort through the ups and downs. We want to find peace, balance and understand. We want to feel connected to others. I help my patients discover new ways of thinking and feeling; to restore and enhance the peace and balance to life,” said Davis.
